How FoodShare Works

Each Sunday morning for 12 years I’ve met Richard at a Trader Joe’s to load a cargo van full of organic food to redistribute into the East Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago. We receive everything that Trader Joe’s sells on its shelves: large boxes of meat, fruit, vegetables, dairy, baked goods, and pre-made items. We even get plants and fresh-cut flowers!

We drive to one of 4 rotating partner churches who’ve been trained to safely sort and distribute the food for a weekly pot-luck style dinner. Single-moms and elderly from the community are also given the chance to shop for a week of free groceries. Extra items are shared with at-risk elderly homes and homeless shelters in the area. Nothing goes to waste! We call this the Love Without Agenda FoodShare.

Our FoodShare feeds 200 homeless people weekly and provides organic food to at-risk families in 4 communities—that’s 125,000 meals.

A few years back, I helped raise money for the van the communities use to distribute the food. This year, I am raising money for the ongoing work in these communities. Please consider a monthly donation to help cover costs to continue to run this proven project.

A monthly or year-end donation will help us feed more people.

FoodShare also provides food for many community events each year. These are photos from a BBQ that Richard hosted in East Garfield Park with FoodShare food. Thanks to the talented Alize Jireh for the photos.

What I’m up to:

Like you, I’m busy doing my best to make the world a better place. As many of you remember, I got a severe case of lead poisoning several years back. I’m grateful to say that I’m recovering well. In fact, I have another round of ongoing treatment in the Dominican Republic coming up in December.

Last year my new company Glocal started to take off. We’re scheduled for a May launch in Amsterdam at the Global Entrepreneur Summit where will will present our new platform. We’re excited to launch in Amsterdam, London & Chicago by end of summer 2019

See you on the road—JSJ
